PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The 273-bed free-standing non-profit
community hospital is West Virginia’s
5th largest hospital. The four-story
174,000 square foot addition included
a new 18 bed critical unit, 18 bed
step down unit, 11 operating rooms,
a post anesthesia recovery unit, 5
endoscopy rooms, as well as a new
entrance, lobby and cafeteria.
Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital has been serving the Mid-Ohio Valley of West Virginia and
Southeast Ohio community since 1898. The South Tower Addition solidifies the hospital’s
presence while meeting their expanding services. The 4-story, steel-braced framed structure
provides 174,000 square feet of additional space to the Hospital, including 11 operating
rooms, an 18-bed recovery area, 18 private patient rooms, a cafeteria, a new entrance
lobby, and more. In addition, the structure was designed to support four future floors.
One of the project’s primary challenges was constructing it over and around a portion of the
existing hospital, without disrupting services. The existing operating rooms were located in
a one-story structure with a concrete joist roof above. Since this roof was to become a floor
in the new addition, it needed to be strengthened with a reinforced bonded topping slab.
However, shoring of the existing roof was not permitted in the operating rooms below. A
calibrated hanger system with drilled anchors was designed to temporarily support the slab
from above during construction.
