The addition to Canton Timken High School included a 41,000-square-foot physical education facility and a 58,000-square-foot Commons Building. The Physical Education Building included a fitness room, wrestling room, and a gymnasium with a running track suspended from roof trusses. The top chord of the gymnasium roof trusses were arched to create the curved shape of the barrel vault roof. The Commons Building connected the existing high school to the existing Freshman Academy Building. Spaces in the Commons Building included classrooms, computer labs, reading and circulation, and a cafeteria. A two-story atrium, above the food court and multipurpose space, highlights the center of the Commons Building. Steel columns and reinforced masonry were used to support the steel beam and joist framed roof and floors. Lateral loads from wind and seismic forces were resisted by ordinary reinforced masonry shear walls.
