An additive to the mortar of the brick masonry of
this 56,000-square-foot building caused embedded steel to corrode. The
resulting cracks, combined with the presence of the chloride ions in the
prefabricated masonry panels, necessitated the removal of all masonry on
the facade.
The reconstruction project architect was creative and incorporated
aqua blocks in the replacement masonry.
Wood tables with waterproofing over them were placed to support the
sloping masonry. Steel stud back-up was placed behind vertical masonry for
stiffness.
