Barber & Hoffman, Inc., has been providing
structural engineering services since C. Merrill Barber founded the firm in
Cleveland in 1934. His distinguished career as a design professional,
together with his partners and successors, has left the public and private sectors
many impressive landmarks. Just a few Cleveland buildings to mention
among these landmarks are: Great
Lakes Science Center, Cleveland Convention Center, the Cleveland
Federal Office Building, Erieview Plaza, Cuyahoga Community College Metro
Campus, Cleveland State University Library
Tower, Severance Hall (designed by Mr. Barber early in his
career), and the old Main Post Office
in Cleveland. His dedication to innovative yet cost-effective design
philosophy has filtered down to his successors, who carry on this tradition
today. Much of our work is located in Cleveland and the northeast
Ohio area, but we have projects designed by us in many other states and as
far as Brazil, Korea, and Senegal, Africa.
Barber & Hoffman is currently directed by five
Principals, whose
continuous association with the firm ranges from 18 years to 33 years. This leadership with a versatile staff
of professional
engineers, E.I.'s, and drafters/CADD technicians possessing
decades of experience coupled with the knowledge of the latest design
techniques, materials technology, and cost-effective planning produces a
wide range of interesting and efficient buildings and complexes. We
currently have two offices, the Cleveland
office with a staff of 22 and a Cranberry Township,
Pennsylvania office with a staff of eight.
Our firm serves design and construction professionals, medical and
educational institutions, government agencies, industry, developers, and
others. We are proficient in serving as a team member as well as the
prime professional. Barber & Hoffman is sensitive to the economic
considerations of any assignment, recognizing that time lost in the
preparation of design documents, late construction starts, and prolonged
construction delays can destroy a well planned budget.
Each project is managed by a Principal who executes the proper
coordination and integration of the special skills of the staff.
Because Barber & Hoffman is a close-knit organization with working
relationships extending over several decades, the daily interplay among the
staff encourages creative solutions while eliminating costly repetitious
research in design challenges. This approach has won for us the
retention of valued clients who have been with us continuously starting as
far back as 1936.
Barber & Hoffman has the legal status of a professional corporation.
