Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is an escape from life's
busy routines and a place to be pampered. The resort is located about
sixty miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and about ten miles from
Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater.
The project was a unique 16,000 - square-foot addition and
renovations to the existing 20,000 square-foot spa building. The
design-build project was completed in a condensed six-month construction
schedule.
The addition was a combination of structural systems. The
exposed sloping roof structure utilized four-inch wood decking attached to
glue-laminated wood beams spaced 12 feet apart. The floor
construction was composite steel beam and deck, which accommodated the
project's challenging schedule.
The renovations to the existing spa were also challenging.
Masonry bearing walls were removed to expand spaces within the
addition to create an "open" theme similar to the addition.
The structure was also reinforced where existing substandard
construction was discovered.
