Originally built in the early 1920's, as the Union Trust Building, this major building with 1,300,000 sq. ft. of leasable floor area features a three-story-high beautiful columned and skylighted bank lobby.  This 22-story building is clad on the street faces (three faces) primarily with limestone, excepting cornices and window surrounds above the 17th floor which are made of terra cotta.  Back walls of the building are faced with clay brick masonry. In 1989, Barber & Hoffman was commissioned to inspect the entire facade, prepare documents for a large initial repair program, and prioritize less critical repair items that could be funded by yearly budgets.

SUMMARY: This masonry restoration and preservation project included

q Anchoring of cracked stone lintels over windows to stones above to avoid total stone replacement. q Replacement of the 20^th floor terra-cotta cornice units, including restoration of corroded steel support structure. q Partial stone replacement at selected locations, combined with patching of the existing stone at other locations. q Removal of brick masonry, cleaning and painting or replacement of steel shelf angles, and replacement of the removed brick. q Cleaning of all street faces of the building.

Drawings:

In 1998, Barber & Hoffman converted building elevation drawings to AutoCAD electronic format and incorporated repairs made each year in layered fashion for easy historical reference of repairs.  This documentation allows the owner to present to potential financiers and potential purchasers an accurate history of repairs made to the building.
