The Severance Arts Center Building on the campus of the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, was built about 1911.  The building was originally built as a gymnasium facility and was later converted into an arts center offering studios in painting, sculpture, metal works, etc.  The need for additional space, general renovations, and current code compliance (ADA, etc.) resulted in a small three-story addition blending well with the existing building and overall renovation work.

The existing building's structural system consists of wood floors on steel beams, wrought-iron columns, and exterior masonry bearing walls.  The roof structure consisted of steel trusses and a hung mezzanine floor.  A structural study was made to fill in a rather large area without a floor at the mezzanine level, but it was cost prohibitive.  Instead, a new addition was created.  The construction of the new addition is concrete slabs and steel framing.

Some of the existing floor areas were reinforced to support heavier live loads.  Structural investigation of existing masonry and mortar was also conducted.  Minor exterior brick and terra cotta restoration was required and the entire building façade was cleaned.
