Baldwin Wallace College is a highly regarded,
private, liberal arts college located approximately fifteen miles south of
Cleveland, Ohio. Wheeler Hall is a three-story masonry bearing wall
structure with a sandstone facade constructed in 1912. The floor construction
is wood joists and steel beams. The wood roof construction is wood
rafters and timber trusses.
The purpose of the project was to renovate the building to comply
with current ADA and code-related requirements. The existing front
open stairway was enclosed to comply with fire-rating requirements. A
new interior stairway was built to replace the rear exterior fire escape
along with a new interior elevator shaft. Ramps were added to the
rear of the building to make the building wheel chair accessible.
Our structural field investigation uncovered existing ornamental
timber roof trusses. Original architectural schemes were altered to
expose the roof trusses, which required repair, by epoxy injection.
Minimal facade restoration was required. Tuck pointing was
performed at weathered joints and the stone exterior was power-washed and
sealed.
