Baldwin Wallace College is a highly regarded, private, liberal arts college located approximately fifteen miles south of Cleveland, Ohio.  The purpose of this project was to provide a facility for the social science department at the college.  This was accomplished by merging two "turn-of-the-century" buildings (Philura Gould and Carnegie Hall) with a new classroom structure.  The new structure accommodated the floor elevation differences between the existing buildings.  The addition and the renovated buildings provided the College with sufficient space to meet their program requirements.  An entrance to the facility was created at the new addition.

Carnegie Hall is a three-story masonry bearing wall structure with a sandstone facade.  The floor construction is wood joists and steel beams.  The roof construction is wood joists and rafters.  Philura Gould is also a two-story masonry bearing wall structure with a sandstone facade.  Wood joists and steel beams comprise the floor construction.  The roof construction is lumber purlins supported by exposed ornamental timber trusses.

A condition survey of both existing structures was performed to determine the structural framing.  Modification and rehabilitation of the existing framing was necessary to meet the code requirements and the owner's programming needs.  Minimal facade restoration was required.
